Almost Over

Last night and tonight are Parent/Teacher nights at school. That means four hours both nights waiting for no more than a total of 10 parents to come find out their kid has 100% in my class. However, it does afford me some serious drawing time!! And since I've been having so much fun with my Drawing 2 class on our current assignment,

I decided to do one of my own.

It took 3 1/2 hours . . . 3 1/2 hours drawing, coloring and talking to parents sporadically. And at the end of it, I was walking across the gym and from 30 yards away, my Vice Principal says "Stephanie!" and waved me over frantically. He told me I had black smeared all around my mouth and chin from the black colored pencils I was using. Just great. My very own 5 o'clock shadow. . . How many parents did I talk to like that?! When that dad walked by and asked me if I had scared all my students away, was that what he was referring to!?!?

Oh well. I decided stuff like that will always happen to me. All that matters is that I have a clear conscience at the end of each day. And having a 5 o'clock shadow doesn't make me a bad person.

But I'm still glad Parent/Teacher nights are almost over.

The summer I got married, my dad made a casual request that some time he would like me to paint him a picture of the story of Lehi's dream. That was a year and a half ago. . and birthdays and christmases have passed with the intention of finishing it in time but I never did.

Until now.

So Merry Christmas Dad.

This painting meets two themes. I painted it for the October Art Exchange for the theme "Heaven & Hell." I was hoping the Illustration Friday theme would be relevant too and I think it is. So it is also for the theme "Beneath."

The inscriptions on the staffs are written in Latin.

The top one says Eternus Gaudium, meaning "Eternal Joy."

The bottom one says Eternus Tormentum, meaning "Eternal Torment."

So I guess going "beneath"wont be milk and cookies.

I kept a diary for most of my teenage years.

It was full of nonsense.

It's embarrassing to read. Really.

So I thought depicting the home that was the setting for 3/4 of my life would represent more meaningful memories. I have way too many to write in each room.

Our House #64

Two parents, seven kids

Bedroom: In my earliest memories this room was PEACH. It belonged to my big sisters. I'd sneak in here a lot and sneak away some of their stuff.

Bedroom:Most years this was the boys room. It has a huge outer space mural that covered one whole wall. It was in this room that I experienced the Northridge earthquake of '94.

Railing: My brother got my head stuck in this railing. But he didn't want to get caught so he left me.

Mom's study: (I spent) countless hours in my moms office talking to my friends on IM. She finally put a limit on how much time I could spend doing that.

Mom & Dad's Room: We didn't go in much, be we could usually find our birthday presents behind the bog tan chair.

Chimney: Christmas Eve is the only day of the year we lit the fireplace.

Cat: We didn't know Shadow's birthday when we got him so we made his birthday the same day as my little sister. But after a while, he never came home.

Family Room: I spent more time in the family room than anywhere else. But the most significant times weren't that long ago. . . In this room, I spent days with my soon-to-be husband as we were dating. We hung out here up until the day we were married. Now our wedding picture hangs on this wall too. . . Along with all six of my siblings. This is my favorite room.

Kitchen: I can still hear my mom singing along with James Taylor on the CD player as she cooked dinner every night. Each of us were assigned a dish day once we reached the age of seven. With seven kids in the family, we had the week pretty well covered.

Dinning Room: My dad made the dinning room table into his office. He liked to be near where the action was.

Living Room: The tallest ceiling in the house. We used to throw tennis balls up into the very corner to get down the spiderwebs. We weren't really allowed to play in here. . . it was moms nice room. . . almost all white. So you can imagine she wasn't very happy when she found the drawings I did on the back of her couches.

Outside wall: We loved to play handball on this wall. . . made it pretty noisy inside though.

No excuses.

I have been slow in producing work these days.

I guess summer break from work (teaching) = summer break from work (everything else).

But i'll let you in on a secret. This is a personal project. And it's not done yet.

We wanted purple and blue to match our room. Fat suggested religious content. I wanted pattern because I have been inspired by Klimt lately.

Fat's had the painting bug lately.

This is his masterpiece. He loves contour line drawing (and cats!). So do I.

He's amazing.

Early stages...enlarged from original drawings in my sketchbook.

In the process. I need a studio.

Experimenting with colors. I'm still not committed entirely.

I'll keep you updated.

This was a sample project I did for my students. They're designing the cover of a literary magazine. The theme is "the inside of an apple." We were directed to use these colors (exactly) and to make it kind of Grimm's Brothers Fairytale style. I chose the medium...watercolor with pen & ink drawings on top. I used this picture concept because I knew my students probably wouldn't. The woman is holding a vile shaped like an apple. Thus the contents are the inside of an apple. Enjoy.
